RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation Course Details 

  • Holders of the MCA/RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate, featuring a commercial endorsement, possess the capability to captain a commercial yacht <200 GT, navigating up to 60 miles from a Safe Haven, both day and night.
  • This certificate stands as a notable accomplishment for those embarking on a career in yachting and for recreational sailors seeking to augment their knowledge and refine their skippering abilities.
  • The preparation phase spans 5 intensive days, encompassing a journey from Athens to the Saronic Islands, skillfully guided by experienced Yachtmaster instructors catering to sailors with a profound theoretical understanding. Throughout the preparation, your instructor will provide targeted coaching to address any knowledge gaps and enhance your skills.
  • After the preparation, the exam extends over 6 to 10 hours per candidate, taking place in Athens. During this period, candidates are tasked with showcasing a comprehensive spectrum of existing knowledge and skippering capabilities, marking the culmination of their Yachtmaster Coastal journey.

Pre-Course

Experience

  • 2 days as skipper
  • 800 miles
  • 12 night hours
  • Half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters

* Reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours for RYA Coastal Skipper certificate holders
** All qualifying sea time must be within 10 years prior to the exam

  • A GMDSS SRC or higher grade of marine radio
  • A valid first aid certificate

NEXT STEPS POST – RYA/MCA YACHTMASTER COASTAL 

Individuals possessing an MCA/RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate and aspiring to launch a career in yachting can progress to the Yachtmaster Offshore exam. With a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate, one is deemed competent to captain a yacht <200 gt on passages covering distances of up to 150 miles from a safe haven, both during the day and night.
