ICC SAIL Assessment

The ICC, or International Certificate of Competence, holds significant importance for individuals looking to charter yachts in various European countries, Greece included. As the minimum required qualification, the ICC attests to the operator’s competence in handling pleasure craft. Recognized as a legitimate recreational sailing license, the ICC is endorsed by the United Nations.

Key Points about the ICC:

  • Purpose: The ICC serves as evidence of competence, a crucial document requested by authorities when chartering a yacht.

  • Legitimacy: Approved by the United Nations, the ICC is the sole sailing license recognized on an international level for recreational purposes.

  • Non-Commercial Use: It’s essential to note that the ICC Sali (Sail) version cannot be commercially endorsed, and it is not suitable for demonstrating competence in commercial maritime activities.

  • European Acceptance: Most European countries acknowledge the ICC Sail as a valid proof of competence. However, it is advisable to refer to official sources or the provided link for the complete list of countries that accept the ICC.

Understanding the significance of the ICC is crucial for those seeking to enjoy sailing adventures in European waters, ensuring a smooth and legally compliant chartering experience. For further details and the comprehensive list of countries accepting the ICC, please refer to the provided link.

Who Can Obtain an ICC (International Certificate of Competence)?

The ICC is a vital document for individuals seeking to charter yachts, but its issuance depends on the applicant’s nationality. Here are key points to consider:

  • Ineligible Countries for RYA-Issued ICC: Nationals of certain countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, and others, cannot obtain an ICC directly from the RYA. They should approach their government to fulfill local competence requirements.

  • Eligible Countries for RYA-Issued ICC: Nationals of countries such as Canada, Greece, Italy, Spain, the United States, and more can directly apply for an ICC through the RYA. Notably, holders of the RYA Day Skipper Certificate can also directly apply without further assessments.

  • ICC Assessment Process: The ICC assessment involves both theoretical and practical aspects. Conducted by RYA-qualified instructors, it lasts a minimum of 4 hours. The assessment begins with theory, followed by practical evaluation. The friendly and pleasant environment ensures a positive experience.

  • Importance of Prior Training: The ICC assessment is not a substitute for formal training. Applicants must possess adequate sailing and navigation skills. If skills fall below the required standard, the assessor cannot sign the ICC application form. In such cases, it’s recommended to consider the Day Skipper theory and practical course.

  • Application and Turnaround: Successful completion of the assessment results in the assessor signing the ICC form. This form must be sent to the RYA, the sole governing body in the U.K. authorized to issue the certificate. The turnaround time for issuance is approximately 2 weeks. Legal qualification is achieved only upon obtaining the physical ICC.

Understanding the ICC’s eligibility criteria, assessment process, and application steps ensures a smooth experience for those looking to charter yachts in European waters. For comprehensive details and the ICC Sail application process, refer to the official RYA website at www.rya.org.uk.
